Poker can be deadly serious when it's played at the high stakes level. For most people, though, it's just a casual game with friends and the chance to win a few dollars. No matter what, winning is more fun than losing. The following steps could be your path to victory.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Stay sober. When the others are knocking back one beer after another or doing shots, sip a soft drink. Casual poker players are more likely to have a few drinks, so your cola may be the key to winning the game.

  2. Step 2

Fold, if necessary. Lots of casual players stay in just because it's more fun than watching. However, if winning is the goal, then don't be afraid to toss away those cards!

  3. Step 3

Watch the cards. Decide what the best possible hand is using the cards on the table and the ones that might be dealt. Being able to make an educated guess at what the other players are holding could be the deciding factor in your win.

  4. Step 4

Keep an eye on the other players. Especially in a casual game, lots of players will give away their hands. Some, especially after a few drinks, will be obviously happy when they have good cards. Others will try to appear very serious, which is just as much a giveaway. Any change in behavior can be a "tell," and you can pick them up by watching, especially if you often play with the same people.

  5. Step 5

Know the odds. Research the odds for the type of poker you usually play. This will help you guess what the other players are holding—and win. Remember, every game and every hand is different.
