How to Speak to the Dead

People have wanted to communicate with dead loved ones since early history. Those who have lost friends and family members often seek comfort in a last communication. Unfortunately, they become easy targets for fake mediums, who depend on the desperate and gullible for their living. There are, however, several ways of speaking with the dead without the help of a medium.

Instructions

1. Use a Ouija board. This is the method most commonly used. Place your fingers lightly on the planchette and ask a question. If a dead person is present, he or she will move the planchette to spell out the answer. When you're done, move the planchette over the word "goodbye."

2. Hold a pendulum. If you don't have an Ouija board, you can do much the same thing with a pendulum. Place your elbow on a table and hold the pendulum by its string or chain using your thumb and forefinger. Ask a question that can be answered yes or no. The pendulum will swing back and forth in a line for "yes," and in a circle for "no."

3. Record electronic voice phenomena. The easiest way is to visit the home or favorite place of the dead person with a portable tape recorder or similar device. Press the record button and wait quietly until tape or memory is full. Later, play what you've recorded with the volume turned to maximum and listen for voices.

4. Put yourself in a trance. This can be done by crystallomancy, staring at an object such as a window, flame or a pool of water. Once you've achieved a trance, hold a pen to paper and begin drawing loops. If a dead person is present, he or she will take control of the pen and write words on the paper that you can read after leaving the trance. Or you might simply sit and see if you can channel the dead person, allowing him or her to speak using your body.

5. Conduct a seance. Gather a few people who also knew the dead person and sit around a table or in a circle on the floor. Hold hands and ask for the dead person to give you a sign that he or she is present.

Tips & Warnings

• Even if the dead person you wish to speak with never speaks back, you may find enormous comfort in a one-way conversation.

• It's not necessary to have a specific atmosphere to communicate with the dead. Midnight seances, black candles and crystal balls are part of a show put on by fake mediums.

• Skeptics insist that these methods of speaking with the dead amount to no more than wishful thinking--that you are actually moving the planchette, pendulum or pen; that EVP is nothing more than the human tendency to find patterns where none exist.
