How to Keep Microsoft Windows Current

With the popularity of Microsoft Windows comes the pitfalls of hackers, spyware and the like that try to invade computers for nefarious purposes. To protect the operating system from outside attacks it is important to have all the latest updates installed.

Microsoft Windows 98 and ME

1. Open the Internet Browser located on the computer in use.
2. Conduct a search for the Microsoft website or simply type in the web browser.
3. Search the Microsoft site for "Windows 98 update" or "Windows ME update" whichever operating system the computer is running. To accomplish this task, at the Microsoft home page type "Windows 98 update" or "Windows ME update" in the search box located at the top right corner of the Microsoft home page.

Microsoft Windows 2000

4. Select the start menu.
5. Click on the setting options.
6. Choose the control panel option.
7. Click twice on the "automatic update" option and choose it.

Windows XP

8. Select the start option on the operating system menu and click on the control panel.
9. Choose the security center option and select "automatic updates". If the view on the computer is set to classic view just scroll down and click on "automatic update".
10. Choose automatic updates.

Windows Vista

11. Click the "change settings" option in the left side panel.
12. Select the start button on the computers operating system. Highlight the "all programs" option and then choose the "windows update" option.
13. Choose the "install update automatically" selection.
14. Choose the recommend updates and select the "notify me about update" option.

• As of July 11th 2006 Microsoft no longer offered any phone tech support or new security updates for Windows 98 and ME users.
