How to Hide Files In a .JPG Image

A relatively old, but still neat trick to show off to your computer-illiterate and savvy friends alike, is hiding a file inside an image. It allows for a sort of "secret decoder ring" flair in the days of technology and super-spy gadgetry. Fortunately, hiding a file inside of a JPG image isn't as hard as hot-wiring your local secret agent's car or building a ballpoint laser.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Files to hide
  • A JPG image to hide the files in
  • WinRAR or similar compression software that handles RAR files

Step1
Gather all the files and the JPG in which you want to store them together in a new folder. Use a valid DOS path and name.
Step2
Use WinRAR or similar compression software to create a new RAR archive containing all the files you want to hide inside the JPG. Use a valid DOS name for the new RAR file.
Step3
Open Command Prompt (DOS) by clicking Start -> Run -> cmd.
Step4
Navigate to the folder you've just created using the command prompt.
Step5
Type 'copy /b "your JPG name" + "your RAR name" "a new JPG name,"' substituting "your JPG name" and "your RAR name" with the actual file names and "a new JPG name" with a valid filename. "A new JPG name" will be the end result.
Step6
Test the new JPG by double-clicking it and making sure it opens normally, exactly like the JPG image you selected to hide the files in.
Step7
Open the JPG with WinRAR or the similar compression software. It will show a list of the files you have chosen to hide, if it worked correctly.
