No room in your home gets as much use as your kitchen. It's not just a room for storing and cooking food, but it's also a place where families eat, entertain, study and watch television. Country decor fits well here because it's casual, warm and practical. There's also such a variety in country style pieces that it's easy to create a look that compliments the other decor in your house.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Glass front cabinet doors
  • Vintage linens
  • Stoneware crocks
  • Country collectibles
  • Freestanding cupboards
Step1
Install natural wood cabinets with glass front doors. If you have wood cabinets that are painted, strip the paint, sand them and refinish with a coat of clear varnish. Wood cabinets are the foundation of a country kitchen and the glass panels will help you show off your country crockery and glassware.
Step2
Use simple trimmings to dress up shelving and cupboard doors. Vintage linens, or fabric that matches your window treatments, will add color and dimension to your wood cabinetry. Drape exposed shelves with vintage tea towels or lace doilies so that just a big of it hangs over the edge. You can also use curtain rods to hang lace inside your cabinets that have the glass panel doors.
Step3
Install unique open storage pieces like a plate rack or pot rack. These types of pieces are not only decorative but also practical. You'll love having plates and pans right at your fingertips and nothing says country more than a pot rack filled with copper cookware.
Step4
Fill counter tops and shelves with unusual jars, old stoneware crocks and baskets. You can group them together for a decorative look or use them for holding utensils, dry goods or fresh produce.
Step5
Use freestanding storage cupboards such as a pie safe or dresser. Today's modern kitchens are full of manufactured "built in" cabinets, but a turn of the century kitchen utilized cabinetry that was freestanding.
Step6
Find and display country collectibles like spongeware crocks and bowls or wooden pantry boxes and rolling pins. Flea markets and farm auctions are great places to pick up these types of items at a good price.

Tips & Warnings

  • Creating a country kitchen doesn't necessarily require a professional designer and a complete remodel. A few well chosen flea market finds and a little elbow grease is often all it takes.
