Spyware is an annoying reality of today's Internet. When a computer user visits a website and downloads software, spyware can often accompany these acts. Spyware can invade the privacy of a person and can slow their computer to a crawl.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Spyware software

Step1
Search the Internet for software that rids computers of spyware. Open the Internet browser and proceed to a search engine. Type the words "spyware removal software" into the search engine and press search.
Step2
Download the spyware removal software. One of the most popular programs is Ad-aware. For the purposes of this demonstration Ad-aware is the software that will be used. From the Ad-aware home page select "Download Ad-aware free" icon on the right side panel of the home page. Click on "Download Now" to initiate the download. Once the download is started click on "Run" option in the download dialogue box.
Step3
Install spyware removal software. At the welcome to Ad-aware setup menu choose "next." After reviewing the license agreement choose Accept the license agreement option and click "next." Type your name or your companies name (optional) in the spaces provided and choose next. Select the standard installation option. Choose the destination folder and select "next." Pick "next" one more time to start the installation.
Step4
Setup the spyware removal software. At the initial setup menu choose "next." In the next dialogue box choose "finish." Download any updates available for the software. This is done because new spyware comes on the scene every day and the software needs to be up to date as possible.
Step5
Scan the computer for spyware. Open the spyware removal software (Ad-aware in this case) and select "scan now." Choose the full scan option from the software menu. The scan can take more than 30 minutes depending on the number of file on the hard drive.
Step6
Restart the computer and then run the spyware removal software again. If the software detects spyware once again, search the Internet for "spybot search and destroy". Download and install the software. Use Spybot to scan the computer. Remove any spybots that are detected. Reboot the computer again and run Spybot a second time.
Step7
Reboot the computer in safe. If there was still spyware software detected on the hard drive after running the search and destroy software a second time it will be necessary to boot the computer into safe mode. To boot into safe mode, restart the computer and as the computer is turning on repeatedly press F8. In the DOS menu select the "safe mode" option and press enter.
Step8
Execute the Spybot software in safe mode. The computer should now be in safe mode. Run the Spybot software again and remove any spyware that is found. After completion restart the computer and run both spyware removal software programs again. The software should not detect any spyware this time around. Congrats-the computer is now Spyware free!

on 10/25/2007 1st step; searching for stuff that 'gets rid of spyware' is the FIRST place that spyware is hidden. You have to ask around and find out who uses what predominantly.

Download.com is a safe bet as most of there stuff is certified safe; though the liability will never be on them if it isn't.

Adaware SE is a good start as it is free and works well. It has options to upgrade but it isn't required.

Hijack this is good if you know what you're looking for; it'll kill processes that start up on the machine.

Spybot is still the free-est and equally efficient spyware killer.
