How to Design Logos with Letters

Many companies, both large and small, have logos that are made up of linked letters. IBM, CNN, and GE logos all are made of letters that link in their logo design. Modern software programs make it fast and easy to join letters in different combinations. But there is still an old-fashioned way to design logos with letters--pencil, paper and brainstorming.

Instructions

    • 1

Take some time to think about the company you want to design a logo with letters for. Remember that a logo is a distinctive symbol that a company wants to be easy to recognize and remember.

    • 2

Understand the company's products, audience and the kind of image desired. Should the design be contemporary and funky or classical with a traditional flair? Tie your logo design of letters to the company's marketing objectives, products and services. The logo design should fit the image that the company wants to portray.

    • 3

Look at the beginning letters of each word of the company name. Notice the letter shapes themselves. By changing the angle or the spacing of letters, you can create a memorable logo. Atlanta Kitchen & Bath is an easy one to see for an example. By writing "A", "K" and "B" slanting downward to the right angle, each letter can be joined. The bottom right-hand point of "A" can be linked or attached to the upper left-hand point of "K." Then the bottom right-hand point of "K" can be linked to the upper left-hand point of "B." Now each letter is linked together slanting downward to a right angle.

Research to look for possible conflicts with any logo you design. You don't want to infringe on anyone's copyright. It is difficult to maintain originality when you are working only with letters, so check trademark search companies to make sure there are no duplicate designs in the United States and internationally.
