How to Create a Wedding Website

You've got the date, place, and (hopefully) you already have the dress. But with family spread out all over the country, dealing with different time zones (not to mention opinions) you really just wish you had a way to tie everyone all together and give information once and not a million times--a wedding website may be the solution!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Visit one of the premier sites for creating your very own wedding website. Packages range from "free" for very basic services to just $7.41 per month if you sign up for a full year. That's only like 2 days of Starbucks! Just like any other site, create a profile complete with login and password, browse the services and see which is right for you! It all depends on how in depth you want to make your page. If your wedding is simply to view pictures, the basic service is probably fine. But if people are traveling from all over the world, it may be helpful to create a wedding website in great detail so the site can answer many of the questions for you, instead of getting numerous calls as the big day approaches.
Step2
Gather information. Now that you've created your specific profile, gather as much information as you can about your wedding. You can begin your site from the day after you get engaged or even after you are actually married, if you just want friends and family to see pics. Truthfully, the best time is probably several months before the wedding so it can be resourceful to people planning to attend. Compile pictures and information you wish to input online. This should eventually include hotel and airport information for guests as well.
Step3
Input the info. Creating the site can be a tad time consuming, so maybe break it up by working on your wedding website for an hour a night over a few nights. That will keep the experience fun. (Weddings are fun, remember!) For pictures, make sure have scanned them on your hard drive and that they are in jpeg form. If they are too large the website will reject them. (It works just like listing something on Ebay.)
Step4
Spread the word! Make sure you email all of your friends and family and tell them that you've created your very own wedding website! Hopefully this will cut down on questions from the guests. Also, keep a master list in your personal email of everyone who will be attending. Then, as you update the site, email them to let them know new info is online!

Tips & Warnings

  • Create the site with your fiancĂ©e. While most guys probably aren't into the details of the big day, pick a night, sit down with each other and work on the website. Since it's not tux shopping, or caterer shopping or venue shopping or any kind of shopping, he may be a little more into it! Especially if you pop a bottle of champagne and snuggle in for the night!

on 3/1/2008 I am trying to decide between the following two wedding website vendors:

http://www.theknot.com
http://www.designourday.com

I don't know if this is the right place for this sort of question but anyone used these two sites? Any feedback?
