Since Nintendo released Gamecube in 2001, dedicated gamers have experimented with ways to back up Gamecube video games. But Nintendo's use of optical media and special size disks mean it is next to impossible to back up games for use in another Gamecube or on the computer. Use memory cards to back up game files with settings and game progress and copy them to new card once you understand these steps.

From Quick Guide: GameCube 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Gamecube-compatible memory cards
  1. Step 1

Insert a blank memory card into Slot B on the front face of the Gamecube.

  2. Step 2

Locate a memory card that holds the game file you want to backup. You probably already use at least one memory card, since many Gamecube games cannot be played without one. Insert the memory card with saved game files into Slot A. Game files appear on the screen.

  3. Step 3

Find the the game file you want to copy. Highlight it with your controller. Press the A button on the controller.

  4. Step 4

Watch for the screen to ask whether you want to copy, move or delete. Highlight "Copy," and press the A button again.

  5. Step 5

Look for the screen that asks if you are certain that you want to copy the file to the second memory card. Highlight "Yes." Press the A button to complete your selection.

  6. Step 6

Wait for the copy function to complete. Remove the memory cards after the process is complete and before turning off the Gamecube. Removing memory cards during copying can damage the memory cards.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save Gamecube game files to use in the Nintendo Wii.
  • Purchase a larger memory card if you anticipate saving many games in progress.
  • Nintendo recommends backing up important games files.
  • Dedicated gamers are working hard at developing other methods to back up games. If your technical skills are sharp, check Gamecube home brew sites on more information about using Max Drive Pro or Phantasy Star Online to backup games.
  • Be sure to copy files, rather than deleting or moving them. Once you delete a file, it is gone forever. Moving a file will remove it totally from its original source.

on 7/13/2008 I play Nintendo games on an infrequent basis, but now, it seems I must ask my kid's permission to use his Wii??? Dammit. I enjoy Mario tennis & golf (the GC versions) and my wife loves Animal Crossing (same system...go figure!).

Please tell us how to get around this dilemma with the Wii (which our son hogs) before my wife switches over to RL GTAIV!!
