Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Decide if your wedding will have an overarching theme. If you're planning a casual daytime event, formal colors like black and red might not work as well as bright playful colors like aqua and orange. You may decide to have a color-themed wedding a la "Pretty in Pink" or "Blue Suede Shoes."
Step2
Choose wedding colors that coincide with the season. This is especially important when considering floral arrangements, as many popular wedding flowers are not available all year.
Step3
Determine which colors best reflect your personality. If you or your fiancé is a sports fan, the colors of a favorite sports team may be appropriate. Perhaps you met your beloved in college and want to honor your Alma Mater. Choose wedding colors that tell a story about your life together.
Step4
Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Looking at dress styles and color selections may help you narrow down your options. While some colors work well for flowers and reception site decorations, they may not translate well onto your wedding party. This step may help you distinguish between dominant and accent colors.
Step5
Look at pictures in wedding magazines and on the Internet for examples of color combinations. You will see some of the same wedding color combos multiple times, as particular pairings like light blue and chocolate brown are very popular.
Step6
Pick out a few invitations that you really like. Many invitations come in limited colors, so choose wedding colors that coordinate with the first wedding related item most of your guests will see.
Step7
Some colors naturally clash and will look particularly bad in photographs. Choose complementary colors, those across from one another on a color wheel. You can view a color wheel online or at a paint store.
