Step 1
Avoid drafting on the bicycle. This will result in a variable time penalty. It is necessary to stay about 3 bike lengths back from the rider in front, unless passing. Passing must be accomplished in 15 seconds, and once passed, it is the passed rider's responsibility to drop back 3 bike lengths.
-
Step 2
Get out of the way if slowing or stopping. If in the way of another racer, this could be considered interference with their progress, and can result in a variable time penalty.
-
Step 3
Accept help only from race officials or approved medical personnel. Accepting help from anyone else will result in disqualification. This includes family, friends or other spectators.
-
Step 4
Keep everything brought on the course. Wrappers, towels, or anything else cannot be dropped on the course as you go.
-
Step 5
Be polite and courteous to everyone. Never yell or use obscenities or foul language towards anyone--other racers, officials or spectators. This will result in a variable time penalty or automatic disqualification, and removal from the course and event. It can also result in banning from USAT-sanctioned events if severe enough.
-
Step 6
Follow road rules on the bicycle. Crossing the yellow line will result in a variable penalty. Always keep to the far righthand side, so that other riders can pass. This also results in a variable penalty.
-
Step 7
Follow USAT rules on wetsuit regulation. If it is not a wetsuit legal race, don't wear a wetsuit. When the water is too warm, over 72 degrees Fahrenheit, it will be ruled not wetsuit-legal.
