How to Place a Money Line Sports Bet

Placing a money line sports bet is one of the easiest ways to risk a little money to get a lot back. Playing the money line is basically picking either the favorite or underdog to win. However, most sportsbooks make you risk more to bet the favorite, and sometimes give you money to bet the underdog. To place a money line bet, follow these steps.

    Instructions

      • 1

Determine the overall amount of money you're willing to lose on all bets. This is called your bankroll, and it should not be more than you can afford.

      • 2

Find a casino sportsbook or an online sportsbook to place your bet. The casino will have a board listing all of the games of the day by sport. Chose the sport you want to bet on and find the teams playing. To the right of the teams, find numbers with plus and minus signs next to them. These are your money lines.

Decide whether you want to bet an underdog or a favorite. An underdog will have the smaller number, often with a plus sign next to it. The favorite will never have a plus sign next to its money line number. All money line numbers are in the hundreds. These are multipliers. A money line of 100 is even money: you wager as much as you get back. If the money line reads -110, you will have to put down the amount of your wager plus 10 percent to make the bet. The extra 10 percent is called juice. If the money line reads +110, you place your wager and if you win, you get your wager plus 10 percent back.

Tell the cashier your bet. Each team has a number to the left of it. This number how the cashier identifies the team. Say the number and then tell the cashier you'd like to play the money line.

      • 5

The cashier will hand you a ticket with your bet on it. Check it for mistakes before leaving the cashier. Put the ticket in your wallet and enjoy the game.

      • 6

If the team you bet on wins, you win. Return with the ticket to the cashier to collect your winnings.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Betting underdogs will yield the greatest return if you win, but keep in mind that they're underdogs for a reason.

    • When you play a favorite, or a money line with a minus sign, and win, you get your wager and the juice back. That means if you play a -110 money line and make a $10 wager with $1 juice, you win $21.

    • Many people have gone broke betting on sports. Make sure you know your limits and don't go over your bankroll.
