Step 1
Place in high light situations. Jade plants will tolerate some direct sunlight. They will thrive in front of a south window, but will also do fine in front of an east window. If given some direct sunlight, they will flower. If growth is spindly, the plant may not be getting enough light.
-
Step 2
Provide an intermediate temperature between 50 degrees F and 80 degrees F. While Jade plants will tolerate high temperatures, they do best if given low temperatures in the winter. In the winter, Jade plants will survive in temperatures down to 45 degrees F. Cooler temperatures will also encourage winter flowering.
-
Step 3
Allow potting mix to dry out between waterings. Water only when you can stick your finger all the way into the potting mix and not feel any moisture. Water less in the winter. If given too much water, Jade plants will rot.
-
Step 4
Put in a clay pot. Clay pots absorb water and will therefore help the plant dry out in between waterings. If grown in a bright window in a clay pot, monitor the plant and if the leaves become soft, the plant needs water.
-
Step 5
Use a potting mix high in perlite or sand. Buy a special potting mix for succulents or mix 1 part standard potting mix with 1 part perlite or sand.
-
Step 6
Pinch new growth occasionally to encourage Jade Plants to branch.
-
Step 7
Watch out for mealybugs. Mealybugs are common parasites on the stems and under leaves of Jade plants. Take care of mealybugs by using a strong spray of water to wash them off. Insecticidal soap is another option.

on 11/13/2009 I have worked in a plant nursery for over 10 years and many questions from customers were about jade plants. The biggest problem was always overwatering. On the other hand underwatering was just as bad.Everyone is so afraid to give too much water, that I heard:I only give my jade plant half a cup to one cup of water a week. This amount will never get to the roots. If possible take the plant to the sink and water it thouroughly or if the plant is too big, water it till it drains out on the saucer. Then lift the plant up and discard the water.Sometimes this is a 2 person operation. My husband used to help me by lifting but one time he dropped the whole plant.I was ready to divorce him!But we picked up all the broken branches and started more jade plants and I love all 12 of them.............Henny.

on 11/21/2008 Hi there, I would go ahead and repot it now if you can tell there's not too much soil. That probably means the roots have grown as much as they can in the soil they're in and could benefit from more room. Good luck. :)
