Step 1
Take all medicines prescribed for asthma daily. These include any daily inhaled medicines, any emergency medications and any pills that the doctor has prescribed to treat asthma. Even missing one day can cause asthma control to be lost and flare-ups are likely.
-
Step 2
Keep all scheduled maintenance visits with the doctor. Doctors can ensure current medications are the correct course of treatment for the asthma. He also answers any concerns about the current treatment plan, and can adjust it if necessary.
-
Step 3
Schedule additional appointments with the doctor as necessary if asthma flares or there are any concerns. Living a normal life with asthma does not mean living with problems, it means eliminating as many of them as possible.
-
Step 4
Research new asthma medications. Discuss them with the doctor. They may be better suited than the current treatment for the asthma.
-
Step 5
Treat underlying problems that trigger asthma. Allergy medications prevent flare-ups in patients with seasonal allergies. Special covers for pillows and mattresses help dust mite allergies. Indoor allergies are well controlled by using an indoor air purifier with a HEPA filter, as well as regular dusting and cleaning.
