Family is the most important part of everyone's life. By preparing the family for a hurricane, you can help keep everyone safe. Develop your family plan now and when a hurricane comes your way, the family will know what to do.

Instructions

    Prepare Young Children

  1. Step 1

    Talk to young children about storms and storm safety.

  2. Step 2

    Reassure the children that preparing early for the storm will help keep everyone safe.

  3. Step 3

    Ask the children to select two small toys and a few favorite books to put in the safe room or evacuation kit.

  4. Step 4

    Show the children a map of where the family will go if an evacuation is ordered.

  5. Step 5

    Let the children help you prepare the emergency evacuation kit.

  6. Step 6

    Make a list of emergency phone numbers, including family members, for the child to keep.

  7. Step 7

    Teach the children how and when to call 911.

    Make a special hurricane related first aid kit.

    Prepare an evacuation kit for the whole family.

    Make up a hurricane kit for the home if you will not be evacuating.

    Remove loose items outdoors that can become flying missiles.

    Prepare a safe room for the whole family.

    Place valuable documents and photos in watertight containers.

    Protect windows and doors with plywood or shutters.

  18. Step 5

    Park your vehicles in a protected area.

  19. Plan to Stay Connected

  20. Step 1

    Make identical lists of phone numbers of contacts for each family member.

  21. Step 2

    Include at least one phone number for an out-of-town contact.

  22. Step 3

    Agree to call the contact should the family become separated.

  23. Step 4

    Decide on a safe, local meeting place should the family become separated.

  24. Step 5

    Buy disposable cell phones for each family member and keep them fully charged.

  25. Step 6

    Decide where you will go if an evacuation is ordered.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fill the vehicles with gas, if the power is cut then pumping gas is out of the question.
  • Get cash from the bank; if the power is cut then ATM's won't work.
  • Evacuate as soon as possible if you live in an evacuation zone or have been ordered to do so.
  • Evacuation centers should be your absolute last choice.
  • Evacuation centers may not allow pets, so plan to evacuate to a pet-friendly motel if possible.
