A runner at third base has gone three quarters of the required distance to score and now is a precious commodity. The first rule of a runner at third is not to get picked off. Chances are, any move that risks getting picked off at third is not a good one. However, there are ways to get a good leadoff without wasting the effort it took you to get there.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Maintain a foot on the bag until you see the ball in the pitcher's hand and the pitcher is on the rubber.

  2. Step 2

Establish a primary leadoff. Get as far off third base as the third baseman is from the bag up to a distance of 20 feet. This is your standard leadoff regardless of the quality of the pitchers pick-off move. If the third baseman is 10 feet off third base, leadoff 10 feet.

  3. Step 3

Leadoff the base in foul territory. If a batted ball hits a runner in fair territory the runner is out. However, if a runner is hit with a batted ball in foul territory, the runner is not out.

  4. Step 4

Face the pitcher with your weight forward on the balls of your feet and knees bent. Ensure your weight is balanced so that you can easily move to your left and to your right.

  5. Step 5

Get a secondary leadoff the base when the pitcher throws the pitch to the plate. Shuffle toward home plate with your chest facing the pitcher and eyes watching the ball at home plate.

  6. Step 6

Continue your momentum toward home plate until the catcher catches the ball or the ball is hit into play. If the catcher catches the ball, immediately return to third base. If the ball is hit into play or the ball gets away from the catcher listen for instructions from your third base coach.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be prepared to score in the event that a pitched ball gets away from the catcher. Your third base coach should give you some verbal instruction to decide if you should attempt to score. It is extremely important not to hesitate in following the third base coach's instructions.
  • Do not allow the ball to get out of your sight when leading off third base. If you do no know where the ball is, immediately return to the base.
