Step 1
Understand the difference between ballroom tango and Argentine tango. Ballroom tango is a European dance and is performance-oriented. It is not true tango. Argentine tango is traditional and is a social dance that is still danced in Buenos Aires and around the world.
-
Step 2
Know the different styles of Argentine tango. The embrace is the basic difference among tango styles, and because the dance is dependent upon the embrace, this changes everything. Decide if you want to dance close, open or in a flexible embrace.
-
Step 3
Browse YouTube for tango. Here, you will find clips of many well-known Argentine tango dancers and teachers. When you see someone you like, research that dancer to discover more about their dance style--it may help you decide what you want to learn.
-
Step 4
Search online for Argentine tango classes in your area. Be sure to use the word "Argentine" in your search, or you may locate ballroom classes instead.
-
Step 5
Talk to the instructor before you attend the class. Ask about their philosophy, style and training. Make sure you will find what you want in this tango class.
-
Step 6
Convince a friend of the opposite sex to attend tango with you. Because mastering tango requires a great deal of practice, it's helpful to have a friend who knows how to dance.
-
Step 7
Wear comfortable clothes to class. If you are a man, wear close-fitting shoes with dance (or at least relatively slick) soles, or dance practice sneakers. If you are a woman, wear heels with dance (or slick) soles that you can comfortably balance on, or wear dance practice sneakers.
