How to Win American Idol

From the first time American Idol debuted, you knew you could win that show and become the next music sensation. So you auditioned for the talent scouts when they came to your area, and out of the millions, you were one of the few who heard the words, "You're going to Hollywood!" The question now is, how do you make it through the weeks and get the votes needed to become the next American Idol?

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have a singing history, such as singing in a choir. If you haven't been regularly singing your whole life, you won't have a chance to win. You could still be picked for the show, but likely to be the spectacular failure for ratings.

  2. Step 2

Stand out from the others. Know what your most outgoing personality is--whether it's sweet, goofy or vicious--and turn up the volume on that personality.

  3. Step 3

Improve yourself as the show progresses--not just in your performance, but also in your appearance. Carrie Underwood and Fantasia (and nearly Clay Aiken) won partly by going from plain to glamorous.

  4. Step 4

Be courteous to and support the other contestants, but remain confident in yourself. These people usually win over the ones who are excessively self centered or humble.

  5. Step 5

Remember that Randy is the judge to impress the most. Paula is easy, and Simon is near impossible. The ones you must impress the most, however, are the viewers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't take the Sanjaya route. Yes, there are groups out there who try to keep the worst singer on the show just to mess things up. It doesn't work in the end.
  • If you don't win, it's not the complete end. You still have a window of fame from having been on American Idol. Milk it for as many public appearances as you can.
  • Winning doesn't guarantee long-term success. Outside of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, who else has won American Idol and become a true superstar?
