You have a business and you have a website but so do millions of other writers, real estate agents and other professionals. How can you get your website to the top of the search engine list? How can you ensure that when people are surfing the Internet, they find you? It's not hard, if you follow some simple steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Tag your web pages. Title tags are often overlooked; that is, the tag at the top of every web page. A good title with searchable keywords will do more to boost your rank that just about anything.
Step2
Pack your pages with searchable content. Most search engines don't search images. A web page or website that is comprised of mostly graphics and little or no text provides no searchable framework for search engines.
Step3
Design your site to be accessible. The most searchable and therefore most marketable websites are accessible. Coding for accessibility means paying more attention to the code behind your website. The end result is a website that performs better in searches.
Step4
Scrutinize your content. General language on a website generally leads to poor search results. Specific language leads to better results. Pay attention to your linked phrases. Every element of your web page has value. "Click here" as a link is a wasted link. It's also not accessible. Make your links descriptive and use keywords.
Step5
Learn to read and understand your server traffic reports. If a business is not being found by keywords which describe or pertain to it, its website content should be changed and retested.

on 5/28/2008 Having content that is unique and more specific can help your website get to the top. For example, if your website is about cars, try to have information about many cars and unique information about cars. Then when someone searches for "porsche XXXXX" where XXXXX is a unique part or component of porsche, your site will be more likely to show as a top result than some other page who doesn't have XXXXX.

on 1/24/2008 Also it helps to boost your Google page rank through link exchanges and one way links. The fact is if someone searches Google for lets say cars, and your site is about cars...the sites than rank higher than yours will be displayed first, or higher. In other words a site with a PR 5 will show higher than a 4 etc.
