Things You'll Need:
- Bible
-
Step 1
Understand that God is not grading you or trying to make you "good." God is trying to build a relationship with you. By growing closer to God and being of the same mindset will change you from within rather than wasting time trying to fix the external problems.
-
Step 2
Admit that you have been wrong. All people sin. Knowing God is not about keeping a pristine list of rules and never messing up. By admitting that you have made mistakes, big and small, you are agreeing to let God deal with your past sins.
-
Step 3
Agree that you will turn from the wrong things you are currently doing. A person who has a strong relationship with God can not remain static and unchanged. They are always a striving for being better, more loving, forgiving, compassionate or involved. God replaces the sin behaviors in our lives with purpose driven desires for a better world.
-
Step 4
Investigate more about God. You can never learn everything about God. Start by reading the Bible. Start in the New Testament gospels or in Proverbs. Let God speak to your heart through prayer. Join a Bible study or church for support.
-
Step 5
Allow God's payment for the world's sins and yours—the death of his son, Jesus—to cover your transgressions. Believe that His sacrifice was enough to insure your security into heaven and a place within the family. Accept the unconditional love, forgiveness and acceptance God offers.
-
Step 6
Drop the negative opinions you have of religious people. Religion has gotten a bad rap due to flawed people, not a flawed God. No one is perfect, least of all Christians. Try to remember that God loves these people as much as God loves you. Concern yourself with your growth and leave the rest to God.
-
Step 7
Continue to grow in your relationship with God by attending a Bible based church, joining a Bible study, reading your Bible regularly and praying.
