Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Verify that you will be away from your family for at least 30 days. Once you are, then you begin to receive Family Separation Allowance on a monthly basis.
Step2
Visit your family. Temporary visits don't necessarily disqualify you from Family Separation Allowance.
Step3
Confirm that you will be away for 30 days after a temporary visit. For any period of 30 days or more of separation, you receive FSA.
Step4
Spend the money to pay for packages and long distance calls. You can also use it to hire people to do work that you would have done if you were at home such as raking leaves or mowing the lawn. FSA may also be needed to pay for day care.
Step5
Find out more about Family Separation Allowance from the Defense Technical Information Center and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service by visiting their websites. These sites have information about military pay, incentives and will post updates as they occur.
