Ostrich farming is among the world's fastest growing agricultural businesses. There are strong, global markets for ostrich meat, eggs, feathers, leather and related products. It is estimated that suppliers are only meeting 10 percent of the consumer demand. Consider the following information as you determine whether this business is for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • At least 2 acres of land
  • One breeding pair including adult male and female ostriches
  • Equipment and fencing
  • Chick house
  • Incubator
  • Brooder room

Step1
Learn everything there is to know about ostriches. Read about their life cycle, physical abilities and instinctual temperament. Understand their basic needs related to climate, shelter, food and socialization. There are numerous books, websites and other resources to support your education. Visit zoos and breeding farms to observe live animals and question those who care for them.
Step2
Learn every phase of commercial ostrich farming. Learn the laws, regulations and policies that control ostrich farming. Understand the expenses and responsibilities during hatching, chick rearing, breeding and slaughter. In addition to the fixed costs of listed items, also consider the variable costs of feed, utilities (power and water), veterinarian costs, insurance and marketing. Hauling, production and sale of commercial products occur at points throughout this process and have additional costs attached to them. Familiarize yourself with consumer demand and prices for specific products. Try an ostrich meat burger and examine decorative ostrich eggshells and feathers. Know that the bulk of your revenue will come primarily from the sale of meat and leather.
Step3
Identify ostrich farmers/breeders, trade magazines and associations like the American Ostrich Association. These are invaluable resources to direct you on how best to establish and operate your farm. Seek opportunities to network with established haulers, producers and vendors of ostrich products. As with any business, ostrich farms require significant initial investment of time and money. However, you will receive a lucrative return on your investment in time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ostrich farms prefer to breed High Pedigree African Black Ostriches because of their early maturity and docility. Trade organizations can provide you a list of reputable ostrich breeders and checklist for your first breeding pair purchase
