Don't be intimidated by its fancy French name--Sauvignon Blanc is not as intimidating or unapproachable as its name suggests. In fact, it is widely enjoyed by wine connoisseurs and beginners alike. Sauvignon Blanc also is food-friendly and can be paired with anything from sea scallops to fried chicken.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sauvignon Blanc wine glasses
  • Ice bucket for chilling
  1. Step 1

Read up on Sauvignon Blanc. Check out the epicurious website or pick up a copy of Wine Spectator magazine.

  2. Step 2

Explore the tastes of Sauvignon Blanc. The main defining characteristics of this wine are herbaceous and crisp, with a delicate citrus flavor.

  3. Step 3

Lean about aging. Sauvignon Blanc is usually aged in stainless steel, so it does not benefit from aging and should be consumed while young.

  4. Step 4

Discover Blended Sauvignon Blanc. This is when the Sauvignon Blanc grape is blended with another grape, generally Semillon. Blended Sauvignon Blanc has more of a smoky flavor because it is casked in oak barrels. This type of Sauvignon Blanc benefits from the aging process.

  5. Step 5

Discover Unblended Sauvignon Blanc. This is when the wine is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes only. Unblended Sauvignon Blanc is aged in stainless steel, and is more crisp and light as compared to blended varietals. Unblended Sauvignon Blanc does not benefit from the aging process.

  6. Step 6

Know how to achieve full flavor. This wine should be served slightly chilled around 60 degrees. Serving at this temperature will allow you to taste all the flavors and smell all the aromas of the wine.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose the right wine glasses. The proper wine glass will enhance the flavor, aroma and texture of Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Attend a wine tasting. Check with fine dining restaurants or, better yet, a vineyard to sample a Sauvignon Blanc.
  • If your Sauvignon Blanc is too warm, cool it quickly in a bucket filled half with ice and half with water.
  • Don't serve Sauvignon Blanc too cold. You won't taste any of the distinct flavors.
  • Don't serve Sauvignon Blanc too warm. It will be overwhelmingly acidic.
