Step 1
Keep speed to a minimum. There is absolutely no reason to go fast on a 4-wheeler in the first place. It is even more important to regulate your speed when you have a child riding with you. In other words, don't go fast. The faster you're going, the more out of control the ATV can get if you unexpectedly hit a bump or hole.
-
Step 2
Stay in known locations. If you're not familiar with the area, don't take a child with you on the 4-wheeler. Know the area, know the terrain and know where you're going when you have a small child riding with you.
-
Step 3
Sit the child in front of you if the child is very small. If the child is big enough to hold on, they can ride behind you. But, that's not recommended until a child is older.
-
Step 4
Inspect the 4-wheeler prior to riding with the child. Ensure the 4-wheeler is safe and not in need of any maintenance before taking a child with you.
-
Step 5
Explain the rules to the child. If the child is old enough to listen, tell them the rules of getting to ride the 4-wheeler with you. They have to hang on. They can't touch things. They can't try to get off until the 4-wheeler is stopped.
-
Step 6
Be safe. Don't do tricks or wheelies or anything else that is risky when you have a child with you.
-
Step 7
Wear proper safety gear. Wear a helmet, long pants and gloves when riding a 4-wheeler. The child should also have this gear on.
