The basic strategy in wrestling is to first wear down your opponent and then pin him to the mat as quickly as possible. Sounds simple? Not when your opponent wants to win as much as you do. The trick is to keep him on the defense. As an attacker, you can wear down his energy level so you can apply more powerful moves on him. By learning a good offensive strategy, you will increase your overall chance of success.

    Overall Match Play Strategy

  1. Step 1

Formulate an offensive plan for each match. Always know what your attack plan is and properly execute the plan.

  2. Step 2

Force your opponent to wrestle your way. Always keep your opponent guessing your every move by consistently attacking.

  3. Step 3

Overpower your opponent if you are stronger. Concentrate on using proper technique if you are weaker instead of fighting his strength. Technique mostly wins over strength.

  4. Step 4

Maintain your composure and remain focused and ready. Never allow any actions by your opponent or spectators to upset you.

  5. Pre-Match Play Strategy

  6. Step 1

Maintain your body in excellent physical condition. Eat healthy foods to strengthen your body and get plenty of rest.

  7. Step 2

Analyze your opponent's wrestling style and both strong and weak points. Listen to the advice of your coach about your opponent and plan your strategy.

  8. Step 3

Attain above and beyond what is required by your coaching staff, and work hard to do what is required. Commit to be the best that you can be. Wrestle during the off-season if possible. Attend open tournaments as frequently as you can.

  9. Takedown Play Strategy

  10. Step 1

Move on the whistle immediately and force your opponent to counter instead of attack you. Attack your opponent's head or control his hips. Keep your weight on your opponent as much as possible.

  11. Step 2

Maintain a wide base and keep your head up. As much as possible, keep your hips even to the mat. Stay on your toes to maintain maximum mobility and pressure.

  12. Step 3

Grab your opponent's ankle as quickly as possible and lift it off of the mat, then push forward. This will throw him off balance.

  13. Step 4

Keep your opponent on the defense and work to pin him immediately. He cannot be on offense if he is on defense at the same time. Vary style and technique as often as possible.

  14. Post Match Strategy

  15. Step 1

Shake the hand of your opponent in a sportsman-like manner regardless of a win or loss.

  16. Step 2

Analyze all of the errors made during the match and work on correcting them.

  17. Step 3

Practice correcting mental and mechanical mistakes.
