SAMBO is a hand-to-hand self defense system that was developed in the Soviet Union, originally for the Russian military and police. The acronym "SAMBO" means Self Defense Without Weapon. SAMBO has three forms: Sport SAMBO (ground and submission fighting, takedowns and throws), Combat SAMBO (striking, chokes, weapon removal from attackers) and Self-Defense SAMBO (self-defense against multiple attackers). Self-defense SAMBO is designed to defend against attackers with or without weapons. Follow these steps to learn more.

Instructions

    SAMBO Prerequisites

  1. Step 1

Read as many books as possible on the tactics of SAMBO as no one book can cover all of the SAMBO techniques. Books must cover all of the systems and methods of SAMBO.

  2. Step 2

Join and participate in a well designed training program that is taught by a SAMBO master. The program must teach the basic curriculum techniques that use types of drills that convert the techniques into skills.

  3. Step 3

Engage in physical and mental training. Practicing SAMBO requires a strong, physically-conditioned body and acute mental alertness.

  4. Basic Defensive Techniques

  5. Step 1

Grip and hold an attacker immediately by gripping arms, hands or clothing. This technique is used suddenly to provide the element of surprise. It is designed to move the attacker to the ground to be set up for the ground attack.

  6. Step 2

Break through an attackers hold by using any of several techniques. Using a counter grip on the attacker's clothing while putting an arm under the attacker's gripping arm will restrain the attack. Another technique is to twist out of the attacker's grip while lowering the body under the attacker's arms.

  7. Step 3

Defend against an attacker with a weapon by gripping the upper arm and forearm. The key here is to immobilize the attacker's arm and control the attacker using his own arm and try to release the weapon.
