Basic Hapkido fighting techniques can take a few moments to comprehend, but a lifetime to master. This Korean martial art teaches you to use an attacker's energy against them. A few basic moves at the core of this defensive discipline are blocking, joint manipulation and the back fall. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Block a punch using the frontal circular knife hand deflection technique

  1. Step 1

Pivot out of the way as the punch is thrown.

  2. Step 2

Make your hand rigid, straightening the fingers to form a knife like shape.

  3. Step 3

Bend your elbow and hold your forearm parallel to the ground in front of you.

  4. Step 4

Guide your hand upward in a circular motion across your body, diverting the punch and ending with your arm in a vertical position.

  5. Escape from a wrist grab using joint manipulation techniques.

  6. Step 1

Make your hand rigid like a knife, when an attacker grabs your wrist.

  7. Step 2

Step towards the attacker, planting your foot in the center of their gravity.

  8. Step 3

Move your hand in a swift downward motion, at a 45 degree angle, to disengage the attacker's hold.

  9. Save yourself from a hard landing using the back fall technique

  10. Step 1

Fall backward. This often happens in combat when an attacker throws you off balance, with a chest kick or a shove.

  11. Step 2

Use your hands and forearms to slap the ground, stopping your falling momentum.

  12. Step 3

Pull your head forward, saving it from hitting the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Joint sprains and breaks are possible. When practicing joint manipulation have a signal to stop if someone is feeling too much pressure on their joints.
  • When practicing back fall techniques, don't attempt the back fall without a practice mat or you could hurt your head.
