If you are passionate about wakeboarding, the laws of physics can either be a boon or a bane. You can't do any of the tricks, flips, twists, and turns without obeying the laws of motion. At the same time, you owe many of your wipeouts to those same laws. Understand the physics behind wakeboarding and use it to your advantage! Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Try skateboarding. Wakeboarding has its roots in skateboarding and surfing. The laws of physics are constant--regardless of the medium. Water may change the game substantially, but skateboarding provides a decent foundation.

  2. Step 2

Move on to snowboarding if the local climate permits. Riding a board on snow may be different than riding on water, but you can study the differences and gain a better understanding of the general physics involved.

  3. Step 3

Watch videos of wake skating, water skiing, or wakeboarding. Pay attention to how the people in the videos are affected by the water, as well as the laws of gravity and human limitations.

  4. Step 4

Sign up for wakeboarding lessons. This is perhaps the best means for truly understanding practical wakeboarding physics. It helps, though, if you have some degree of understanding before putting the laws of motion into practice.

  5. Step 5

Pay attention to the role of the tow rope in wakeboarding. Understand the physics involved, and better master tricks and stunts by using the rope for all it's worth!

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep safety first when participating in this sport. The water can be a deceptive danger. For this reason, wear a life preserver at all times while wakeboarding.
  • In addition to the life vest, you should always have a partner ready to help should something go wrong.
