Things You'll Need:
- skateboard
- skateboard helmet
- knee pads
- elbow pads
-
Step 1
Check out local skateboard parks, and if you don't skateboard yet, buy or rent a skateboard and try it. Once you get to know a few people at a skateboard park, ask about skateboard or vert clubs (a.k.a. ramp clubs). Start online with "Skateboard Parks.com" to locate a skateboard park nearby.
-
Step 2
Ask for skateboard club information at community centers, including local YMCAs, area schools and even churches or synagogues if you don't live near a skateboard park or have access to one in the vicinity.
-
Step 3
Hook up with a club or group that loves skateboarding. Vert clubs are often just called skateboard clubs. Look for one that either has a vertical ramp set up or members know where to go for safe practice.
-
Step 4
Start a club yourself if you can't find one in your area—community centers and YMCAs are usually open to helping new sports club start ups as long as safety guidelines are in place. Find a legitimate sponsor or mentor who has skateboarding knowledge and who can help guide the club in a positive direction.
-
Step 5
Make a decision about a club if several are available locally. Decide upon a vert club that keeps safety, consideration and human respect in mind. Be careful: it's not fun if people are constantly hurt. Make sure leaders know what they are doing and have plenty of skateboarding experience and education.
-
Step 6
Join the vert club you feel most comfortable with. Go with your gut instinct when making your choice. Fill out the right paperwork for joining the vert club. Keep in mind, though, that formal paperwork may not be necessary or a part of club operations. Pay fees only if things are formalized. Enjoy vert skateboarding!
