Homecoming is a special time of the year for most high school students, but it can also be a scary time for parents with parties going on. Keep your teens and their friends safe by throwing a Homecoming-themed party at your house. Read on to find out how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Sit down with you teens. Ask them what they would like to see at the party and find out what their homecoming theme at school is. Reassure the teens involved that the party will be respectful to them and is not a way to be in their business.
Step2
Contact other parents to form a small party committee and to let them know what you are doing. Call all the interested parents together for a meeting to decide on food, drink, decorations, invites, rules, rides for those that are not able to drive yet and any other concerns that may come up.
Step3
Assign a different role or area (i.e. decorations) to each set of parents. This keeps the cost and stress of planning down for each person.
Step4
Inform the principal of the school about what you are doing. Let them know that you are having a safe homecoming party at your house for after the dance.
Step5
Extend the invitation to the whole school, if your house is big enough. If it isn't and there is a lot of interest, consider moving the venue to a larger place. Better to change the plans a little to include everyone than to have kids out who might drink and drive.
Step6
Keep in contact with the other parents to make sure that plans are going smoothly.
Step7
Consult with local businesses about the safe Homecoming party that you are throwing and they might donate the things you need.
Step8
Offer rides to kids from the dance to the party to avoid those that get lost or other ideas along the way. Give the kids some space while the party is going on. Don't leave the house entirely, but only go in to check on snacks and drinks.

Tips & Warnings

  • ALWAYS show the kids that you trust them, as long as they are earning your trust. They may surprise you with a great party with no incidents.
  • ALWAYS set house rules and make sure they are posted or announced at the party.
  • ALWAYS have other parents involved in a large party involving teens, let them share some of the responsibility and planning. You will form better relationships with the parents of your children's friends.
  • DO NOT make your kids feel like you are trying to baby sit them. Include them in the planning process.
  • If you suspect alcohol has been brought to your party, DO NOT allow anyone to leave without contacting their parents first. You could be held criminally liable, if the situation is not handled appropriately.
