How to Find a Convertible Mechanic

Convertibles are great—until they break down! When problems come along, it's important to have a mechanic who's knowledgeable and trustworthy. However, as it is in many areas, a good man (or woman) is hard to find. Some mechanics will take advantage of the car owner and overcharge, while others simply do shoddy work. Finding a good one can be a challenge, but the rewards are worth the effort. Read on to learn how to find a good one.

1. Ask other people who own the same type of convertible. A fellow owner who has a good mechanic will probably be happy to share the mechanic's name with you.
2. Take a close look at the mechanic's shop. It should be clean and well-organized. If there are other customers waiting, see if they look satisfied. Ask if they've previously used this mechanic.
3. Check the mechanic's credentials. Ask if he or she has worked on a convertible like yours before, and whether his or her work comes with a guarantee. Do some research to find out what questions to ask about your particular convertible.
4. Get an estimate. Then check with other mechanics or convertible owners to find out whether you're being overcharged.
5. Try independent mechanics. Many convertible owners find that independent mechanics are more friendly than those working in dealerships or chain stores.
6. Look at the records at the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no complaints about the mechanic you've chosen.

• Remember that you're the boss. It's part of the mechanic's job to answer all your questions politely and to give you complete information. If you think he or she is hiding something, keep asking. If you're uncomfortable at any point, walk away.
