Keeping up with new satellite radio technology and installation isn't as elusive as it used to be. Many satellite radio systems today are easy to install, especially if they are portable. Understand just a few basic installation concepts to get started. Most systems come with installation manuals, and in fact, some say right on the system purchase package that professional installation is not required.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit any store carrying electronics and car stereo systems, such as "Comp USA." Ask for the car stereo section or department. Don't hesitate to ask a customer service agent questions about various systems and how to install them. Most electronic store customer service personnel seem eager help and explain. Or you can order a portable satellite radio system for replacement online.

  2. Step 2

Figure out what system you need for replacement. Satellite radio companies (e.g., "XM" and "Sirius") offer different service grades at lower to higher package costs depending on the grade. Select only the package needed for replacement for the time being. Tons of accessories are available, but everything needed for installation should be in the package.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a new satellite radio portable system. The price ranges between $30.00 and $140.00.

  4. Step 4

Begin installing your new portable satellite radio system. Mount the system rack somewhere logical in the car dash. Make sure it is secure.

  5. Step 5

Mount the antenna some place on the outside of the car like on the roof. Mount it inside if the vehicle is a convertible or some other soft top vehicle, such as a Jeep. Mount it on top of the vehicle's dash so that it can pick up signals easily through the windshield.

  6. Step 6

Be sure to run the wire from the antenna to the mounted rack discreetly or better yet, run it down behind your dash from your antenna to the mounted rack if you're able to. All of the other parts just plug in after that. Start enjoying your new portable satellite radio system.
