Once you've determined that you need a new muffler for your car or other vehicle, there's still the question of how and where to buy it and have it installed. If you have a car or truck it's easy enough to find the proper replacement muffler. If you have an unusual or older model vehicle, it might be a little harder, but here are some tips and tricks to make your experience run smoothly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to your local mechanic shop or a chain repair shop like Midas or Meinke. These folks usually have expert knowledge and quick access to any type of muffler on the market.

  2. Step 2

Have your mechanic shop evaluate the vehicle's exhaust system. The muffler might not be the only part that needs to be replaced. Mechanics will check the other parts of your vehicle's exhaust system, including the exhaust manifolds, cylinder heads, to ensure that they are in good working order.

  3. Step 3

Ask people who own the same type of vehicle you do where they get their mufflers. If you don't frequent an auto parts shop regularly or have a mechanic you trust, this is a good way to avoid delays and problems when ordering your new muffler.

  4. Step 4

Take care if you order your muffler at a retail store on your own. Be certain that you have the right model number and pertinent information.

  5. Step 5

Save all receipts and paperwork for reference just in case a problem occurs after purchase or installation. Know the terms of your warranty.
