  1. Step 1

Learn about the waste management industry. Visit the Air and Waste Management Association or the Waste Management World websites for information. This industry is concerned primarily with the amount of waste produced, where to put it (mainly in landfills) and how to transport it. Recycling is an aspect of waste management that has grown in popularity, and converting waste into energy is a hot topic.

  2. Step 2

Look for different job titles under the "waste management" category on a job board such as Careerbuilder. There are a wide variety of opportunities in the field of waste management, from frontline operations consisting of driving trucks and operating heavy equipment, to more technical jobs such as environmental technologist or hazardous waste management technician.

  3. Step 3

Examine the job advertisements for waste management positions on the job board. Consider both the qualifications required to fill the jobs and the job duties described.
