Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rocks
  • Potted plants, optional
  • Dried Plants
  1. Step 1

Collect rocks of different sizes, shapes and colors. The prettier the rocks, the more beautiful your garden. Choose specimens with interesting wear patterns and colors that complement one another. Keep lighting in mind while collecting. Flecks of quartz or mica stand out in sunlight.

  2. Step 2

Choose a well-lit location in your home. Good lighting brings out the character in the rocks and is essential if you include live plants in the rock garden.

  3. Step 3

Decide if you want your garden on the ground or up on a table. Either add character to you home. If you choose to use a table, put down a protective covering so your rocks won't scratch the surface.

  4. Step 4

Place potted plants first if you wish to include them. Prop rocks up against pots or even hide pots entirely with piles of rock. Choose plants that grow slowly so they don't overtake the rock garden.

  5. Step 5

Place the largest rocks first. Stack them. Tilt them. Prop them up against other rocks to create a natural look. Place the rocks so they look like they have fallen into place. If they look arranged, tilt more of them up against each other. Add your favorite pieces last.

  6. Step 6

Purchase dried grass or flowers and place individual pieces between cracks to create the illusion that they are growing out of your garden. Artificial moss is also a great addition. Small pieces coming from the most noticeable spaces create a dramatic effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dried grass or very thin flowers create a more realistic look than large dried blooms.
  • Add a fountain to your rock garden for an even more natural feel.
  • Buy ceramic pots with natural designs for your potted plants. Make sure their colors complement your rocks.
  • Ask permission to collect rocks on private property.
