When a baby begins teething, it can be a trying time for both the parent and the child. Teething can cause severe discomfort that leads to frequent bouts of fussiness and crying. You will also notice your baby drooling often and putting their hands constantly in their mouth. To reduce teething pain, try these techniques.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Give the baby something to chew on. A liquid filled teething ring or a rubber toy can help reduce the teething pain. If you chill the objects, it will feel even more soothing in their mouth.
Step2
Fill a bottle with cold water. Giving your baby small amounts of cold water will not only provide pain relief, but also replenish the liquids that have been lost due to drooling.
Step3
Use a baby teething gel. Products like Baby Orajel are applied to the infant's gums and temporarily numb the area.
Step4
Rub the gums. Using your finger or a cold spoon, gently drag your finger over their gums to reduce the teething pain that they experience.
Step5
Try an over the counter pain reliever. Infant doses of acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be given if the baby is still experiencing a lot of pain. Follow your doctor's advice on the dosage that you should give your baby.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid liquid teething rings once the tooth breaks through the surface. The baby may be able to chew through the material and access the possibly toxic liquid inside.
  • Do not give your child aspirin products to reduce teething pain.
