Decorative painting inside your home is a fun project. Sponge painting a wall brings your wall to life with a mottled finish style that is easy to do. To go with the decor of your room, you should select an interior paint with a color and finish that matches your style.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Eggshell base coat
  • Paint color(s)
  • Large, flat sea sponge with medium pores

Step1
Decide what area in your home and which wall you want to sponge paint.
Step2
Choose an interior color or colors that you would like the sponged area to be. Home improvement stores, such as Lowe's, have a vast interior paint selection with various color options to choose from. Ask the store's knowledgeable sales staff to assist you with the selection of your interior paint.
Step3
Purchase an eggshell base coat, and use it to paint the wall that will be sponged. This light-colored base paint creates a perfect canvas for applying the sponge paint color.
Step4
Moisten the sponge that you are using for sponge painting with water, and twist the sponge to wring it out.
Step5
Dip the sponge lightly into the interior paint. Lift the sponge out of the paint and squeeze the sponge so that it is not dripping paint but is still wet.
Step6
Dab the sponge lightly onto the wall that you are sponge painting. You can rotate the sponge for different types of patterns.
Step7
Tear off a piece of the sponge to dab sponge paint into the corners of the wall. Use an artist's brush with fine bristles to dab dots in areas of the corners that the sponge cannot reach. The dots will blend with the rest of the sponge-painted wall.
Step8
Allow the sponge-painted wall to dry, then repeat the sponge painting process with as many colors as you would like to have on your wall. The most dominant color should be applied last.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a large, flat sea sponge with medium-sized pores for the best effect.
