Step1
Visit local radio stations and see if you can get a meeting with the head of programming or one of the popular DJs. This isn't easy because there are any number of people trying to do the same thing, but most radio stations have an opportunity for an unsigned/underground artist to get radio play. Do whatever it takes to get that artist to be you.
Step2
Get a Myspace page. Cassie was discovered because of the popularity of her Myspace page. Myspace has become a legitimate way to scout new musical talent and is a free way to get the necessary publicity.
Step3
Place your demo on a blog. One major label has told artists to stop sending in demo tapes and place their demos on blogs that they can send to the company.
Step4
Send demos around to all of the major music magazines that focus on your genre of music. Most music magazines review unsigned/underground acts and a good review from one of them could be just the boost you need to get signed.
Step5
Produce your own website where you not only promote your demo but also any live shows you may be doing. Your website will give people more information on you, where you perform and a chance to listen to your music.
Step6
Pass it out. Attend local events, musical festivals, and sporting events and pass your demo out. Hire some attractive people and have them go around and pass your demo out to the masses.
