1
Pick your yarn and color. There are some beautiful yarns you can use to make it colorful, such as multi-colored yarns or Lion Brand Homespun yarns, which are soft and textured and make for a beautiful scarf. Or, you can choose to make it one solid color. You can make it striped as well by changing colors every few rows. If using regular yarn, use about a five ounce weight. Use an I hook for regular five ounce yarn and a K hook if using Lion Brand Homespun yarn.

2
Single crochet a chain the width desired for your scarf. You can make it wide or thin.

3
Crochet, for example, 21 chains for your width, do another row of single crochet into the chain, which will be 20 chains. Count your chains to make sure you haven't skipped any.
-
4
Turn and do another chain. Keep doing this until you have reached the desired length. It can be as long or as short as you want it to be.

5
Find a good stopping point and pull the end of the yarn through your final loop to secure it if you run out of yarn and need to start a new spool, or you are doing a multi-striped scarf. Thread the yarn through the stitches with a plastic needle to hide and protect it from unraveling. Do this at the very end of your project as well when the final length is achieved.

6
Add fringe to the ends of your scarf, if you like. First, decide how long you want the fringe to be. For example, if you want it to be three inches, cut the yarn into six-inch lengths and fold in half. Attach the threads one-by-one into the stitches at the end of the scarf-one for each single crochet stitch. With a folded strand, use the crochet hook to slip through the single crochet stitch. Then knot the thread by inserting the two ends of the strand into the loop you have made. Pull and you have two threads for fringe in the single crochet stitch. Repeat until you have completed all stitches.

Tips & Warnings
Make the stitches the same tightness all the way through or you will end up with a scarf that is thicker on one end than the other.
Make sure to count your stitches as you go to ensure that you don't skip any.
If making a long scarf, you may need multiple yarn spools. It's a good idea when using more than one spool to make sure you get the same dye lot for each spool to make sure there are no differences in color.
