Know if a Family Member is an Alcoholic

Knowing if a family member is an alcoholic can save their life. While some of the warning signs of alcoholism involve common sense, there are other more complicated warning signs that can be tricky to interpret.

Instructions

    • 1

Notice changes in their behavior patterns. If a family member has an increase in inappropriate or impulsive behavior, that is a possible warning sign of an alcoholic. Also look to see if the person is getting defiant and angry without cause, especially when questioned about their secretive behavior. Additionally, if you notice a pattern of lies or denials, that is another sign of alcoholism.

    • 2

Be aware of run-ins with the law or financial problems. Multiple arrests for DUI are a sure sign of an alcoholic. If you notice an increase in their overall legal troubles, and they start missing appointments more frequently, those are additional warning signs. Also look to see if they have financial troubles, as being an alcoholic becomes a drain on anyone's budget.

    • 3

Observe any changes in their appearance. If the family member has tremors or slurred speech, that is another sign of an alcoholic. More obvious signs include a smell of alcohol on their breath or admissions to oftentimes being drunk. Sometimes the most obvious signs are the hardest to pick up on.

    • 4

Ask your family member directly if they have a problem with alcohol, instead of beating around the bush. Ask how much and how often they drink alcohol. If they deny an alcohol problem, explain to them your observations and fears. Offer to help get them treatment, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not be judgemental when talking to a family member about a possible alcohol problem. Express your concerns in a loving manner.
