Step 1
Determine the type of publishing job you would like. There is a wide range including editorial, production and manufacturing, design, sales, and marketing/publicity.
-
Step 2
Read as often as you can. This is the best way to find out what is being published today. If you already have a prospective employer, read as much of their material as possible.
-
Step 3
Establish your education and qualifications. You will likely need a degree in English, communications or something similar.
-
Step 4
Write and edit on your own at the start. You will need to have samples of your work to present to a prospective employer. An internship with a newspaper or magazine is best, but you can also look for local newsletters that will take your services.
-
Step 5
Research publishing companies that you wish to work for. Determine which publisher(s) you would be the best fit for. Learn everything about what they publish.
-
Step 6
Craft your resume. Highlight everything in your education and background that your potential employer would be looking for. Make sure you have your portfolio of clips assembled before calling for any interviews.
-
Step 7
Start at the bottom. You will likely have to take the lowest job you can find first--something that may involve clerical or labor tasks and not actual publishing. Do the best job you can in whatever job you get, keep up with what's going on in the industry, and look for the opportunities to move up toward the job you really want.
