Suede is a strong and durable fabric, but there are some rules to cleaning it, particularly if the stain is something challenging, like chocolate. Don't panic, and follow these steps for easy removal of chocolate stains.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Butter knife
  • Luke warm water
  • Dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Clean terry cloth towel
  • Corn meal (optional)
  • Suede brush (optional)
  1. Step 1

If the chocolate has dried, gently scrape excess chocolate from the surface of the suede using the BACK side of a butter knife. If the stain is chocolate sauce, gently dab up as much as possible without spreading the stain or working it further into the surface.

  2. Step 2

Mix a solution of one or two drops of dish soap with a small amount of water.

  3. Step 3

Stir the soap and water rapidly, or shake in a glass jar to create a large amount of suds.

  4. Step 4

Apply ONLY the sudsy foam to the suede using a sponge. Dab foam into the stained area of the suede.

  5. Step 5

Wipe dry with a clean terry cloth towel.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat if necessary.

  7. Step 7

If the stain remains, gently dust the area with cornmeal. Wait 5 to 10 minutes, allowing the cornmeal to absorb the stain. Brush off the cornmeal.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is important to remove as much of the excess chocolate as possible in the first step.
  • Begin cleaning as soon as you notice that chocolate has gotten on the suede. Gently dab up chocolate sauce, or melted chocolate without spreading it or working it into the surface.
  • If the suede develops water spots, allow to dry completely & rub with a clean terry cloth towel or suede brush.
  • When applying the soapy mixture, only use the foam. Getting the suede wet will create water spots (see tips to remove water spots).
