How to Replace a Lost Vehicle Registration Certificate

Registering a vehicle for the first time can be a complex process, involving documentation and possible inspection. So it can be a headache if you find that your Vehicle Registration Certificate has been lost, stolen or destroyed. Luckily,getting a replacement is straightforward.

Step1
If you have previously had a V5C (Vehicle Registration) form in your name and there is no change to your details or those of the vehicle, you can apply for a replacement over the phone. Ring the DVLA on 0870 240 0010, confirm your details and pay the fee with your debit or credit card. Your replacement certificate should be delivered within 10 days.
Step2
If your personal details or those of the vehicle have changed, you will have to complete form V62. You can download the form from the DVLA website or pick one up at your DVLA local office or any licence issuing Post Office branch.
Step3
Complete the form. You will must provide your name, address and date of birth. Submit details for the vehicle, including the make, model, colour, registration mark, taxation class and chassis, frame or VIN number.
Step4
Post the completed form along with your fee to: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DD. Details of the current fee can be found on the form.
Step5
Wait for your new certificate to arrive. It should reach you within 4 weeks, but allow 6 weeks before contacting the DVLA.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to use your full name on the form, no initials.
  • Do not send cash or a blank postal order with your form, as these can go missing.
