A good frame can enhance a painting and keep it safe. Some art is specifically meant to be hung without a frame. This is an artist's choice. Framing can be expensive, but it offers a complete look for your creation. A poorly framed picture can take away from its appeal, so select the right materials to keep your art or photos looking exceptionally well.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Acid-free backings
  • Eye screws
  • Woven wire
  • Frame glass
  • Matting
  • Wall hook
  • Wood or metal frame
Step1
Evaluate your painting, photo or illustration to decide what frame material to get. A wooden frame will be the most practical for your home. It is reasonably priced and works well for canvas paintings and other paper textures. Metal is good for most images, but can be tricky to pair with canvas paintings.
Step2
Select the right frame based on its molding. Wood frames come in a variety of unique patterns and borders. Pick a frame with a finish and pattern that matches the décor of the room where you will hang it. Choose a rustic texture for a country home (like barn wood) or a smooth, solid portrait frame for an office.
Step3
Gather materials to hang your frame. Most frames come with the tools needed to do this, but if you are getting a custom frame, you will need to acquire some supplies. Get enough woven wire picture thread to stretch across the back of the frame. Account for a few extra inches for hanging and room for a bit of give.
Step4
Round up screws and hooks. You will need 2 eye screws (to attach the wire to the back of the frame) and 1 to 2 strong wall hooks to hang the frame on.
Step5
Shop for matting supplies. Textured or colored matting can enhance certain details of an illustration or painting. You might also want to crop a painting or photo to hone in and highlight a specific quality. Explore different framing and matting options at Michaels.com (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • When hanging a framed painting it should be as flush to the wall as possible.
  • Use a glare-free glass with UV protection when framing a special photo or painting. This will offer the best display and protection for your precious moments.
  • Be sure that the backings to your paintings are made of the proper materials. Purchase acid-free matting and backings when gathering your framing supplies. They cost a bit more, but your work will be safer.
