Traveling to Copenhagen, Denmark, is like going back in time. This city of 1.5 million people, the largest in Denmark, has romantic canals, houses that look like they belong in a fairy tale and cobblestone streets. The National Museum of Denmark fits in quite nicely, as it was originally the palace for the royal family. Now it houses a large collection of Danish artifacts and is open free to the the public.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make your way to the National Museum of Denmark on one of the 2,500 free bicycles that the city of Copenhagen offers to residents and visitors. They are recognizable by the advertisements found on the solid back tire.

  2. Step 2

Stop at the Main Collection first and view artifacts, animal skeletons and even mummified human remains representing the civilization of the early Danish people.

  3. Step 3

Tour the Viking Collection and see artifacts of the reputed fearsome warriors and the collections of Danish Christianity relics which include elaborate alters and exquisite jewelry and other ceremonial objects.

  4. Step 4

Save some time to see the Ethnographic Collection (The Peoples of the World Exhibit) which houses the largest collection of Inuit Eskimo whale-bone carvings, intact kayaks and costumes. There are also artifacts from early cultures around the world.

  5. Step 5

Treat your children (12 years of age and under) to a day filled with dressing up in early Danish clothes, hands on playing in Viking ship replicas and taking a make-believe class in a reproduction of an early Copenhagen classroom.

  6. Step 6

Get an idea of how life was lived in Denmark in the 20th century, when you visit the Victorian Home. It has original furnishings throughout and even the original bathroom fixtures.

  7. Step 7

Explore the Mill House, which is a home that was made from an actual working mill. It is also fully furnished with the belongings of the couple who called it home.

  8. Step 8

Find out more information about the National Museum and get up-to-date schedules of upcoming events and exhibits when you visit the museum's website (see Resources below).
