New Orleans, Louisiana is considered one of the most famous haunted places in the United States due to its relationship with the dead who often reside among the living in above ground tombs. The city is rich in history and mystery, with stories of vampire sightings, haunted landmarks and cemeteries called "cities of the dead" where restless spirits may still commune with the living visitors who tour them.

Step1
Get the official information about haunted New Orleans on NOLA.com (see Resources below). Take a virtual tour of the most haunted landmarks in New Orleans with online videos and interactive maps.
Step2
Respect New Orleans voodoo history and visit the tomb of famous voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Marie Laveau's original tomb is thought to be located in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans' famous French Quarter.
Step3
Visit with one of the resident ghosts at the famous La Petite Theatre across from 616 St. Peter Street. Look for the ghost of Caroline, an actress who met her death by falling off a third-story balcony before a show.

Tour the museum of haunted artifacts located at the house of vampire writer Anne Rice in the Garden District. Her house is open to tour on Monday afternoons at 1239 First Street.

Take a tour of the one of the country's most famous haunted houses located on 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans. The Lalaurie House has a sordid legend attached involving a fire that uncovered a lifestyle of slave torture and cruelty perpetuated by one of the city's elite members, Mrs. Delphine Lalaurie.

Consider browsing a book about haunted New Orleans and its famous landmarks. Try Troy Taylor's book "Haunted New Orleans: Ghosts and Hauntings of the Crescent City" at Amazon (see Resources below).

Stay at the famous Myrtle's Plantation on 7747 U.S. Highway 61 just outside of New Orleans. Thought to be haunted by former slaves who lived there, the plantation is known for the supposed pictures of ghosts captured there. Book a room at the bed and breakfast by calling (225) 635-6277.
