The Harlem Shake is a dance style where the top half of the body, shoulders and arms wiggle and shake to the beat of the song. It became mainstream in 2001 when G-Dep featured the dance in his music video for "Let's Get It."

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Do the Shimmy Shake

  1. Step 1

Keep your feet at shoulder width and put your arms to your sides. Bend your wrists so that your palms are facing the floor and your fingers are pointing forward.

  2. Step 2

Move your left shoulder up, your right shoulder down and push your hips out to the right. Keep your torso still.

  3. Step 3

Move your left shoulder down, your right shoulder up and push you hips to the left. Keep all of these actions in sync with each other.

  4. Step 4

Repeat steps two and three over and over again to the beat of the music. This is the basic motion of the Harlem Shake, but know that you are not finished yet.

  5. Step 5

Change speeds as you do the shimmy shake. Try double time for a few steps and then switch back to single time. Throw in a couple of pauses in there too.

  6. Step 6

Mix things up once you master the basics. Try other arm movements during the shimmy and keep the dance always changing.

  7. Do the G-Dep Harlem Shake

  8. Step 1

Put your hands on your hips with your elbows out. Stick your chest out so you look like Superman. Now take your hands off your hips, but keep the same position. Point your palms at the floor and your fingers toward yourself.

  9. Step 2

Lean to your right and stick your chest out so that your right shoulder is down and your left shoulder is up. Keep your arms relaxed and let them swing with the motion.

  10. Step 3

Lean to your left now. Move to your left fluidly and only stick out your chest again when you have leaned all the way to your left. Now your left shoulder should be down and your right shoulder should be up.

  11. Step 4

Repeat steps two and three while rotating your arms, but keep the same angle in your elbows and wrists. Do this motion at least twice as fast as steps two and three.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a dance move where there is no one way to do it correctly. Make up moves as you go along and you will be all right, as long as you stick to the basic idea of the dance.
