Although Windows Vista is available, Windows XP still dominates the personal-computer industry. Even so, many users love the new look and feel that Windows Vista offers, whether it is the sidebar or the design of the default interface. Fortunately, it is possible to change the standard Windows XP look to something more akin to Windows Vista, without having to pay an arm and a leg for a costly upgrade.

Modify Windows XP to Look Like Windows Vista

  1. Step 1

Download and install a program that will help to modify your system's theme. WindowBlinds, for example, is one of the more popular Windows XP enhancement applications (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Visit Wincustomize.com to find skins that look like the current Aero desktop associated with Windows Vista (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Download a separate program to create the desktop sidebar feature. Several different applications exist, most of which are free to use.

  4. Step 4

Find skins that include alpha compositing, a graphics technique that makes menu bars transparent. This is one of the biggest features of Windows Vista, making the overall appearance of the operating system sleeker and more sophisticated.

  5. Step 5

Make simple changes to your Windows XP desktop, like changing the wallpaper, screensaver or the cursors your mouse uses. You can find a wealth of terrific skins and designs meant to give your computer an updated look.

  6. Step 6

Set your system's visual performance to the highest level through the "Display" function on the control panel.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's possible to mimic the look and feel of Windows Vista without having to actually modify Windows XP with hacks. Programs, like Window Blinds, can make modifications that are native to Windows XP.
  • Some very elaborate modifications call for a certain level of tech savvy. If you're a computer novice or beginner, seek help to avoid wreaking havoc on your system.
  • You can make changes to many elements of your Windows XP theme without installing software or modifying your system.
