If you have a chin with proportions that are out of step with the rest of your face, know that the issue may be addressed with chin augmentation surgery. In chin augmentation, the chin is sculpted with the help of an implant.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Eye drops
  • Whistle, bell, walkie-talkies or an intercom system
  • Telephone with a speaker phone

    Prepare for a Chin Augmentation

  1. Step 1

Ask your doctor about the materials used in the implant surgery. You'll want to make sure that your implants aren't made with a material to which you are allergic.

  2. Step 2

Give your surgeon a full rundown of all herbal supplements, natural supplements, vitamins and medications that you've been taking. Include both prescription and over-the-counter products. It may be best to discontinue some of these items in the weeks leading up to your surgery, and your doctor will be able to let you know which path to take.

  3. Step 3

Arrange to have someone take care of you in the 24 to 72 hours following your surgery. Remember, if a crisis situation develops, you may not have the strength to summon help if you're on your own.

  4. Step 4

Establish an easy method of summoning your caretaker should you need his help. Purchase a whistle, bell, walkie-talkies or an intercom system.

  5. Step 5

Keep an eye on alcohol consumption as you prepare for your procedure. Alcohol is best eliminated in the days leading up to your surgery.

  6. Step 6

Consider your telephone setup. Get a telephone with a speaker phone and place it within easy reach of your recovery bed. Turn the ringer off so it won't disturb your sleep.

  7. Step 7

Prepare for chin augmentation surgery by purchasing eye drops. After any kind of surgery, the eyes tend to be dry.

  8. Step 8

Expect to be able to resume normal activities in about 2 days, after the pressure dressing on your incision has been removed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Often times, other cosmetic surgery procedures--such as cheek augmentation, neck liposuction or rhinoplasty--are done in conjunction with chin augmentation to create optimum balance. If you have room in your budget for additional work, consider discussing these procedures with your doctor.
  • Expect your chin augmentation surgery to take about 30 minutes. It is typically performed with the help of a local anesthetic and intravenous sedation. However, a general anesthetic may be used in some cases, especially if other procedures are being done in conjunction with your chin augmentation.
  • Do not consume hot foods in the weeks following your chin augmentation surgery. The area surrounding your lower lip will be numb, and you run the risk of unknowingly scalding yourself.
