How to Treat Fujian Flu

The Fujian flu is one of the more prevalent strains of Influenza Type A, and as such is one of the most likely to cause infection in humans. The Fujian bird flu originated on mainland China in the Fujian province, and remains one of the more dangerous strains given its resistance to most traditional treatments. It spread rapidly during the flu season of 2003-2004, and has since been added to standard vaccination lists. It is difficult to treat Fujian flu without proper medical attention.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Medical attention
  • Vaccination (especially in younger children or older adults)

Treat Fujian Flu

Step1
Confirm with your doctor that your infection is, in fact, the Fujian flu. This is important, as certain medications work only against certain specific types of flu. Influenza Type B medication will not work against Fujian flu or any of the strains of Influenza Type A.
Step2
Ask your doctor about Symmetrel and Flumadine, two antiviral medications that have worked against Influenza Type A in the past. Although they were considered ineffective for the 2005-2006 season by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), this can change from year to year (see Resources below).
Step3
Wear a mask and gloves when you are treating someone who has Fujian flu. This will help prevent the transmission of the illness to you or to others. Be sure to change your mask and gloves every time you assist someone with the flu.
Step4
Take an over the counter remedy to help you make it through the day. Everything from Robitussen to Ny-Quil can help to make you more comfortable while suffering from the flu. It is important to remember, however, that these over the counter medications do not treat the flu in a traditional sense, but instead mask the symptoms to help increase your comfort level.
Step5
Learn more about Fujian and other Type A influenzas at Web M.D. (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Get the flu vaccine at the start of the flu season as soon as it becomes available. Receiving the flu vaccine, while not completely foolproof, can help prevent Fujian flu infection, as well as reduce its potency should a true infection develop.
  • Do not delay in seeking medical attention if you believe you have been infected with Fujian flu. As with any flu infection, you should have the help of a doctor both to be comfortable and to treat the Fujian flu.
